Train vs truck collision closes section of Highway 33; minor injuries

Idaho State Police investigated a crash involving a semi-truck and a freight train near milepost 62 on Highway 33 about 15 miles west of the Rexburg area around 2:53 p.m. Tuesday.ISP said the semi driven by 21-year-old Zakary M. Shurtliff of Hamer was slowing down to a stop but hit the last car of the train and demolished the engine compartment of the truck.

ITD closed the road at two locations, Sage Junction and Twin Butte Road until they get the 1 ton bales of hay picked up and the semi cleared.

As of 8:00 p.m., the road was still closed.


ISP said Shurtliff walked away with minor injuries.

According to officials, Shurtliff was wearing a seatbelt, and the crash is under investigation.
