Group of teens leads deputies to drunk driver

What led officers to A DUI arrest was a group of teenagers. They were on the way to a basketball game when they realized something was wrong with the car in front of them.

“We deiced to turn around and go follow them and call in the license plate to tell the cops to keep the road safe,” says Joshua Clarke, passenger.

The teen driver followed behind at a distance, one person recorded, and the other called 911.

“There was a fence and she had ran into the fence and taken out the fence as soon as we got there she swerved off and started driving. As we followed her she hit more than ten mailboxes, took out a car’s mirror and almost hit kids in a mini van,” says Whitney Apel, passenger.

“She kind of scratched a car going down and she swung into the driveway, getting out of the car we looked at her and we could tell that she was not right so the cops were on their way,” says Clarke.

“She side swiped a car, knocked it’s mirror off, knocked her mirror off and then turned into her driveway and tried getting out and we stopped her and told her just sit there because she couldn’t walk or anything,” says Lazai Koontz, teen driver.

An experience that they call both bizarre and frightening.

“It was something scary to watch because seeing that, I was shaking so much, it was just crazy because seeing a drunk driver nearly kill people and going over places and nearly killing herself and putting herself at risk,” says Clarke.

But they did learn an important lesson firsthand.

“Definitely don’t drink and drive, if anything if you’re going to drink, call a cab or call a safe ride so that way you’re safe and people around you are safe,” says Koontz.

The sheriff’s office says the kids did the right thing. If you see someone driving suspiciously or recklessly, call the police. If you are following them, be at a safe distance and make sure you aren’t speeding and putting yourself in danger.
