Yellowstone seeks to replace windows on historic hotel

Mammoth Hotel dates to 1913 and was added onto in 1937.

Yellowstone National Park planners are proposing to replace 172 windows at the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel to better withstand earthquakes while acknowledging that the project will harm the building’s historic character.

The window swap is just one part of a building rehabilitation project that redoes floor plans and interior finishes, replaces hot water and electrical systems, and adds insulation and new fire detection and suppression systems.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports that the replacement of the Mammoth hotel’s windows has drawn concern from the Wyoming Historic Preservation Office.

The National Park Service is seeking public comment on the project, including any ideas for mitigating the adverse effects to the hotel’s historic character.

Comments are due Feb. 16.
