INL Director shares research projects being done at the desert site

The director of the Idaho National Laboratory shared some of the research projects they are working on at the site.

Dr. Mark Peters said they are researching how to recycle cell phones.

“We have a long-standing expertise in the recycling of nuclear fuel, so that expertise can be used in recycling other materials. We recycle cell phones to recover precious metals, recycle stuff from salvage yards to recover materials to be used for magnets and other things,” said Peters.

Peters addressed the Idaho Falls City Club Thursday talking about the projects being done at the site.

He added the scientists at the INL site are building space batteries, vehicles to use on mars and biomass by turning food grease into bio-diesel.

As Peters put it, “Eat fries today and drive your diesel truck tomorrow.”
