Who’s hiring for summer jobs?

As we get closer to the start of summer, it also marks the beginning of the summer job hunt. Who is on the lookout for these seasonal positions?

“We hire a couple hundred seasonal employee’s in the Parks and Rec. Department,” said Greg A. Weitzel, the director of Parks and Recreation Department of Idaho Falls.

It’s not just teens who are on the hunt for summer positions. Some unemployed adults are taking full advantage of these seasonal hiring’s.

“Whether you’re a teenager, young adult, or a senior and you’re looking for a great part-time job or seasonal job, we encourage you to apply,” said Weitzel.

According to the Idaho Department of Labor’s March Unemployment Rate report, the Gem State’s employment has seen some growth with an increase by 1,963 to 823,423.

The total number of people 16 years of age and older working or looking for work, increased by 1,646 from February to March for an all-time record high of 848,097.

“Seasonal work is opening up a lot,” said Hope Marrow, a regional labor economist at the Idaho Department of Labor. “High school age kids are either done with their winter sports or the jobs are opening up and [they] are trying to prep for summer time. A lot of them are antsy about grabbing jobs in March and April.”

Because the labor market has such a low unemployment rate, this is actually good news for teens.

“We have this interesting shift especially in those traditional high school age jobs where employers are grabbing on to anybody,” Marrow explained. “If they can grab anybody that can possibly year round.”

With more opportunities for teens, what do people hiring look for?

“We look for people who have a good positive attitude, who are really ready and willing to come to work,” said Weitzel.

Including those soft skills.

“Showing up on time, or how to communicate with people face to face,” Marrow said. “If a 16-year old can be charismatic and want to be there and is going to show up on time, they’re more than likely going to get a job offer.”

With new businesses and seasonal positions opening up right around the corner, it’s the perfect time for teens to brush up on those interview skills and type up that resume.

Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation has a variety of jobs opening up this summer, that range from aquatics, working the golf course, and their parks clean up, “The Green Team.”
