Idaho Falls celebrates Cinco de Mayo at Tautphaus Park
Many gathered in Tautphaus Park in Idaho Falls today for Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
The day celebrates the Mexican army defeating the French army, which invaded Mexico in the mid-1800s. This is the 30th anniversary of the celebration in Idaho Falls. There are performers from all over Eastern Idaho and Utah doing many cultural dances. People also lined up outside the food vendors to get authentic Mexican food. The event organizers say today is a celebration for Mexico, but also a way to bring different communities together.
“People come to expect because they like to, they like the Mexican culture, they like Hispanic culture,” said Sergio Romero, chairman of the Idaho Falls Cinco de Mayo. “And we are very grateful because Hispanic culture and Anglo culture, and other cultures around, we are working together. We’re working together. Living in Idaho Falls, we like to share our culture with other people. This is the most important part, you know, working together, respect each other.”
The Cinco de Mayo celebrations go until 7 pm tonight and continue Sunday at Tautphaus park from 11 am to 7 pm.
