Crews assessing trail failure on Salmon-Challis National Forest

Possibly due to Forest Service blasting in the area, a partial failure of the Middle Fork River Trail #6044 was discovered Saturday on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

It happened between Meyers Cove on Camas Creek and Waterfall Creek on the Middle Fork Salmon River.

Crews had been working with light surface blasting to remove “points” or “knobs” out of the trail to create a safer and smoother trail tread. The slope failed several hours after crews had left the area and was found when they were returning to camp.

The Forest Service has assessed both a short-term alternative route and a long-term fix.

“The Forest recognizes the immediate need for access, however, public safety is our number one priority,” said North Fork District Ranger Ken Gebhardt. “The Forest will be evaluating the situation and make a decision how to move forward in the most safe and efficient way possible.”
