EBR-1 Museum to open Friday
In 1951, the United States completed and commissioned the first nuclear reactor to produce a usable amount of electricity. Experimental Breeder Reactor 1, operated until late 1963 and was decommissioned in 1964.
President Lyndon Johnson and Atomic Energy Commission chairman Glenn Seaborg designated the facility as a Registered National Historic Landmark on August 25, 1966.
It has operated as a museum every summer since 1975.
EBR-1 hosted more than 10,000 visitors from across the world last year. More than a quarter million have visited since it opened.
The museum opens for the season Friday and will provide free guided tours seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Labor Day.
It is located on U.S. Highway 20/26 between Idaho Falls and Arco, about 18 Miles southeast of Arco, Idaho. See map below.
