Lady Russets hang another Track and Field Championship banner

The Shelley Russets have had a long history in their athletic department.

Coming into the spring sports state tournaments, they sat at 47 championship banners hanging in their gym.

On Tuesday, the Russets girls track and field team brought home the gold from Boise and another state championship in their final season at the 3A level before moving up to the 4A level next school year.

The last girls track and field team to win a championship was two years ago when the girls and boys both won state championships in the same year.

Co-head coach Drew Wilson tells Sportsline that his girls rank first in heart of all the girls he has coached.

“We had some other young ladies willing to give up individual events to be part of relays and we debated that and changed our mind and ended up being in individual events and they came through at state and scored big points for us.” says Wilson, “We brought everybody that qualified for state and they were actually sitting out on the track and watching them get just as excited for them to clear a height as anything and I think that is the biggest reason we had three girls go over four ten.”

Coach Wilson has been coaching the track and Field team since 1995, he says the three girls jumping 4 feet 10 inches is a new record for him in his 25 years.

One of the girls set a new school record at 5 feet 4 inches in the high jump event.

Ryan Campbell, is another co-head coach he says they felt good coming into the season.

“This years a little different, a lot of things kind of came into place as the season went girls started getting momentum as we went into districts we thought we maybe had a chance at second or third, and the girls just had a really good district meet that set us up for success.” says Campbell.
