Meridian listed as Idaho’s fastest growing city

The U.S. Census Bureau’s newest population estimates indicate Meridian has the 10th fastest rate of growth in the nation at 4.7 percent in 2017. That’s up from 13th in 2016. Meridian’s population is 99,926 people.

According to the report, 90 percent (181) of Idaho’s cities saw population gains over the year, while six communities lost population. American Falls saw the biggest drop of 37 people.

Boise remains the state’s largest city at 226,570. Nampa was third largest at 93,590.

Idaho Falls is Idaho’s fourth largest city at 57,098. The city grew by 1,071 people from 2016 to 2017.

Pocatello was the 5th largest city in 2017. It grew by 475 people over the year to 55,193.

Some of the other larger cities in eastern Idaho were Ammon (13,978), Chubbuck (13,959), Rexburg (37,549) and Blackfoot (11,970).

Idaho’s top seven cities accounted for 37 percent of the state’s population and 39 percent of the growth.

The majority of Idaho’s cities (167) are classified as small and have a population of less than 5,000. They range from Soda Springs at 4,413 to Warm River, which has a total population of 3.
