Nursing home residents beating the heat

Some are beating the heat by staying indoors. The elderly community, in particular, is at risk for heat stroke and dehydration. Residents at Parkwood Meadows Assisted Living Community kept cool on this “Manicure Monday.”

“We have a wide variety of activities that are going on daily for them to be able to keep them out of the heat. We’re doing our manicures, we have or movies, we have entertainment that comes in to keep them outside of the heat, that way they’re safe here and we can keep an eye on them,” says David Newsome, Community Relations Director.

They’re also making sure they’re staying hydrated and safe.

“We have a hydration program here. We want to make sure that they’re consistently getting water. We have bottled water and making sure we’re getting that refilled for them daily throughout their meals. We also consistently make sure if they do go outside that they’re protected with sunscreen, we have hats for them as well. We want to make sure that if they go outside that they’re with somebody, whether it’s staff or if it’s another resident,” says Newsome.

Some don’t mind staying inside.

“If it’s in between then that’s alright but if it’s straight heat then forget it,” says Susan, a resident.

“I haven’t been out in the heat, I love the activities indoors,” says Sharon, a resident.

Especially when they’re inside having fun.

“Well they’re interesting they keep you involved and distracted from the heat,” says Susan.

“I like the nail polish. Oh and bingo, everybody loves bingo,” says Sharon.

Remember if you have elderly neighbors, make sure to check on them during the hot weather months.
