East Idaho man offering new facility for athletes

A new gymnasium for athletes looking to improve their game and take it to the next level is here in Idaho Falls.

Apex Athletic Performance has been in Idaho Falls for about a month.

It is not your typical gym to pump iron and get a good workout in.

Trevin Swensen is from eastern Idaho and played football at Shelley High School and went on to Snow College to play football there.

He tells Sportsline the goal of this new gym is to help high school and college athletes get on the map for recruiters and scouts.

“I’ve always wanted a gym that has got 25 30 yards of turf, the reason for that, you can’t just lift and you can’t just run,” says Swensen, “I mean a lot of coaches at the high school level when you go to P.E. classes weight lifting classes at school you lift or you run and it’s not done correctly and it’s not done the right way. So having the turf has been fun for us, so we can work on our agility our acceleration work and any top speed work where we need to go further than 20-30 yards we’ve got a lot of tracks in the area we can go hit up the tracks and we got a new treadmill where we can work top speed on.”

Swensen was an All American Football player at Snow College.

He says that athletes are learning the incorrect way to lift weights and get into some bad habits and he wants to fix that.

He acknowledges that college and pro teams don’t seem to look at this East Idaho very often when it comes to the prospective athletes.

He is hoping his program and gym will provide more opportunities for athletes and bring respect to Eastern Idaho.

“It’s tough, being an Idaho athlete is tough, I’ve been there, I didn’t play division one level but I was close and I had a really great time but I know that we’ve got division one talent in Idaho I know we’ve got NFL talent in Idaho and same with any other sport it’s just, we’re in a town where we’ve got a small town mentality and I don’t know what it is but I’m trying to change that people think that getting away with just being good enough at this sport is good enough, but at the end of the day you need so much more and if you have it now to get to the college level I’m very happy for ya and I’m very pumped for ya but if you get to college and its a whole other level, and if you can learn how to lift and come to a program like this then go to a college program, you’re already ahead of the ball game. ” says Swensen.
