Rabbit foot fire continues to grow uncontained
The Rabbit Foot fire north of Challis grew by 3,200 acres Tuesday to an estimated 26,294 acres. The fire is still zero percent contained.
Managers said the fire was mainly active on the eastern flank Tuesday. Crews were being assigned to areas where the potential for success was best and risk to firefighters was acceptable. There are 529 personnel assigned to the fire.
Heavy equipment is being used to establish indirect firelines. Burnout operations may be conducted in the next several days to eliminate the available fuel between firefighters and the active flame.
Crews are also working to establish an anchor point to engage the fire in the Van Horn fire burn scar.
A community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Salmon High School to answer any public questions about the fire.
