Where the problem lies with DMV outages

Lines at the DMV are usually pretty long and with system outages, it can make the trip even more of a hassle. County sheriff’s offices facilitate the DMV, but they are not the ones responsible for the system, it’s the Idaho Transportation Department.

Recent outages and system issues have some people upset.

“They’re face-to-face with our deputies in there and we’re dealing with them and they get quite frustrated and a lot of times its frustrating to the sheriff’s office because we’re waiting on someone in another location to work on that technology in that system,” says Sgt. Bryan Lovell with the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

The system is going through an update, ITD is updating an old system from the 80’s.

“During that time of modernizing that system, we’re going through a lot of updates and glitches in the system as we’re going through it, we’re coming up with new bugs that we’re fixing,” says Megan Stark, Public Information Officer for ITD District five and six.

The issue isn’t just on the counties, making it more time consuming to fix.

“It just takes a long time being this is a statewide project, it’s not just countywide it’s statewide so it’s a very big undertaking,” says Stark.

ITD is thankful for the sheriff departments and counties working with them through these updates. They just ask that you be patient as they work through these bugs and glitches.

This is the second update of a three-phase project. In 2019 they will be rolling out another new system for vehicle titles and registration.
