Body recovered from Gallatin River in Yellowstone identified

UPDATE:

Yellowstone National Park officials have identified the man as Dane M. Offutt, 29, of Big Sky, Montana. The cause of his death is still under investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Yellowstone National Park rangers believe a body found in the park Wednesday may be that of a missing person from Gallatin County, Montana.

The body was recovered from the Gallatin River near where an abandoned vehicle was found on October 6. The vehicle was located on U.S. Highway 191 near mile marker 29 inside the park.

On Sunday evening, October 7, a missing person was reported to the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office. Park officials said the body found in the river appears to match the description of the missing person.

Yellowstone Park will release the name of the person once next of kin has been officially notified.
