Sheriff’s office: Clear frost off windshields or get a fine

Winter weather can be a pain for driving on the roads. Especially in the mornings when cars are covered in frost. The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office says it will pull drivers over if their windows are not clear.

“The statute says that your windshield, your side window, wing windows and your rear windows have to be clear of anything that’s not transparent,” said Sgt. Bryan Lovell with the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says it has already seen quite a few drivers without clear windows this season. Not clearing off your car windows can be dangerous to those around you.

“We have kids that are still walking to school, riding bikes to school,” Lovell said. “We have crosswalks and school zone areas, bus unloading zones. And, you know, for the time it takes to take a minute and warm up your car and scrape those windows off and completely clear so you have the most vision possible, that’s a lot better than ending up in a crash or getting hurt or getting someone hurt.”

Windows aren’t the only thing to pay attention to in the winter. The sheriff’s office asks that drivers wear their seatbelts, come to a complete stop at stop signs and pay attention to their driving.

“As the temperature gets colder, people need to think in their head that, you know, there may be moisture on the road, there may be ice on the road,” Lovell said. “There may be bridges or overpasses or places where trees are shading the road that have slick spots, black ice, you know, unforeseen hazards and they need to be prepared for that.”

If you get pulled over for not having clear windows, there is a fine of $67.
