Ignition interlocks face Idaho DUI drivers this year

DUI offenders will face a new challenge in Idaho beginning this year. The Idaho Legislature approved a new law allowing judges to require ignition interlock devices.

Madison County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Corporal Isaac Payne said the devices are used to regulate the driving of individuals who have been found guilty of driving under the influence.

Previously, the devices were only issued to people with a second offense or more. But, Idaho became the 31st state to issue ignition interlocks to every DUI driver this year.

It is up to the discretion of the courts to impose the requirement.

At this time, in Madison County, the devices will be installed and maintained by a private contractor.
