Wyoming hospital patient has rare bacterial infection
The Wyoming Department of Health says a patient being treated at the Cheyenne hospital has found to have a rare antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection.
In addition, the agency says the organism infecting the patient also included a rare antibiotic-resistant gene.
The Health Department news release says it does not appear the infection was acquired at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center where the patient is being treated.
The agency says the patient is a Laramie County resident but didn’t provide a name, age or gender.
It did quote a hospital infectious disease specialist as saying the patient has responded to treatment and is in good condition.
State Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist says the gene found with the patient has been identified in only a handful of states over the past few years.
