Wyoming committee backs waiting period for abortions
A legislative committee has advanced a bill that would require a 48-hour waiting period for women in Wyoming planning to have an abortion.
The Casper Star-Tribune reports House Bill 140 passed the House Judiciary Committee on a 6-3 vote Tuesday. It now goes to the House floor for further debate.
The proposed bill would require women to wait 48 hours after receiving that information before undergoing the procedure.
The only exemption, according to the bill text, would be if the abortion is necessary to save a woman’s life.
The Wyoming Legislature has generally been reluctant to approve abortion-related legislation over the past decade. Since 2009, 11 bills relating to abortion have been proposed. Of those, only two were signed into law.
