Sweden, Turkey discuss extraditions demanded by Ankara
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey’s state-run news agency says justice ministry officials from Turkey and Sweden are holding talks on Ankara’s demands for the extradition of people it considers to be terrorists. The two-day discussions started Wednesday. Turkey had threatened to block Sweden and Finland’s bids to join NATO, insisting they change their stance on Kurdish rebels and other groups that Turkey considers as terrorists. NATO operates by consensus and Turkey’s approval is key. Turkey’s parliament has yet to ratify Sweden and Finland’s membership in NATO. Finland and Sweden are abandoning their long-standing military nonalignment after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Turkey summoned Sweden’s ambassador to protest allegedly insulting reports on Swedish state TV concerning the Turkish president.
