School board to consider Teton High School mascot in July

The Teton District 401 School Board will entertain a discussion about Teton High School’s “Redskin” mascot during a regularly scheduled board meeting July 8. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
Victor resideent Stephanie Crockett urged the board to consider changing the mascot during a March school board meeting. It was last considered about five years ago.
The Board said it scheduled the discussion for July because May and June agendas were already full and expected the mascot discussion to be both lenghty and well-attended.

Concerned about a huge crowd without adequate facilities, the Teton School Board will not discuss the fate of the Teton High School “Redskin” mascot at its next board meeting Monday.
The issue was raised by Victor resident Stephanie Crockett at a board meeting last month.
With some recent experience with the issue, the district wanted to make sure it was logistically prepared for that discussion. In 2013, the public filled the THS auditorium to talk about the mascot change, after Superintendent Monte Woolstenhume proposed to do away with the controversial mascot. The decision was ultimately overturned.
“In this particular instance, given what happened five years ago when the mascot change was discussed, the school board would like to hear from and have involvement from the community, businesses, and most importantly the students and staff of our high school before proceeding,” said school board chair Chris Isaacson.
Isaacson and Superintendent Monte Woolstenhume said they set each month’s board agenda with an emphasis on priorities. At this time, they said those priorities include the oversight of construction of two new schools, plus renovations and additions to four others, and continuing strategic plan objectives.
