Idaho Ed Board approves tuition hikes at 4-year institutions
Update: On a 5-3 vote, the State Board of Education approved increases in tuition and fees at each of Idaho’s four-year colleges and universities, as requested by university administrators.
The percentage increases were as follows:
University of Idaho 5.6%
Boise State University 4.9%
Idaho State University 6.1%
Lewis-Clark State College 5.5%
“All of us would like to reduce the costs or hold the costs down for students,” Board Member Andrew Scoggin said. “We put our institutions in a very tough situation when they have normal increases that are going to arise in order to provide quality education and to maintain facilities. Cost to students is critical, but so is the quality of their education.”
Based on the approved increases, full-time resident tuition and fees have been calculated for the next two years.

Several of Idaho’s top universities will be raising tuition fees next fall. The University of Idaho held an online work session today with Boise State, Lewis-Clark State College and Idaho State University to discuss fee increases that will take effect as early as next year.
Tuition for ISU is currently $7,420. The state’s Board of Education plans to increase Idaho State University’s tuition fee by 6.1% by next year. It is the biggest increase of any of the four universities.
It would increase tuition by $450 per semester from this year’s tuition. The Idaho Board of Education made its final decision today at 4:30 p.m.
As expected, the reaction on campus is not positive. Several students on campus believe that it might decrease enrollment.
“A lot of people come to ISU because it’s cheaper than Boise State, for example. So, I don’t think people would come here anymore if they raise and raise the tuition,” ISU freshman Fynn Lohse said.
However, tuition fee increases won’t affect everyone. Current students have tuition-lock, so the change won’t affect their tuition. However, it will affect tuition fees for incoming freshmen.
