Widespread Anthrax exposure training for emergency response

In the case of widespread chemical exposure, emergency medication is needed. Although it is a rare situation, receiving medication is essential for saving lives, and it can be hard work.

This week, Southeastern Idaho Public Health is teaming up with community partners for preparedness training. The exercise is planned for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The scenario is a suspected widespread anthrax exposure. Partners will be exercising plans and procedures on dispensing medication to exposed community members.

“We all need the practice. We have to make sure we have all the processes and procedures in place so we can make sure this flows smoothly in the event that something does happen,” Devin Hughes, program manager for Public Health Preparedness, said. “The scenario is anthrax but it can happen for everything.”

On Wednesday, the partners will be holding a mock “Point of Dispensing” and are encouraging the public to check it out. It will happen from 9 a.m. to noon at Reed Gym.
