School gun incident remains under investigation

UPDATE 4/24/19: A week after a male juvenile was found carrying a loaded handgun into Sandcreek Middle School, law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said it has not found any other related threats or incidents tied to the case.

The youth involved was still in custody at the 3B Detention facility this week and going through criminal proceedings. He is likely to ultimately face felony charges in juvenile court.

The gun was a semi-automatic pistol. It has been returned to the boy’s parents, who owned it.

Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Bryan Lovell said it is critical to report suspicious activities, like the April 16 incident, immediately. Fast reporting, he said, allows law enforcement and school administrators to intervene as soon as possible.

The male juvenile was carrying a handgun.

The student was being held in the 3B Detention Center. He has been referred to the prosecutor’s office for bringing a deadly weapon onto school grounds.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were working with school administrators to investigate any other students or potential threats tied to the incident. they said no other students were directly threatened.

A Sandcreek Middle School student is in custody of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office after bringing a gun on campus in a backpack Tuesday afternoon.

According to the school, all students and staff are safe. Acting on the reported suspicions of other students, the principal and school resource officer quickly identified the student and secured the weapon.

The student has been placed in the 3B Detention Center on pending charges for possessing a deadly weapon on school grounds.

The Bonneville School District encouraged parents to discuss the issue with their children and express the importance of, “If you see something, say something.”
