New Teton Valley program aims to keep land trash free
Teton Valley residents are taking part in a new program to keep the land free of trash.
A Tuesday night girls lacrosse practice at Sherman Park in Victor is also a chance for the team to pick up trash in the park. The team adopted this area of the park as part of the new adopt a public space program.
“It might be a bike path, or a school area, or a playing field, a park,” said David Hudacsko, owner of RAD Curbside and who started the new program. “Or some of the other ones are just simple trailheads and river access points.”
So far, 45 people in the valley have signed up to adopt a public space that they will keep clean. Some are school groups or sports teams while others are nonprofit organizations. It not only includes parks and public spaces, but also canals, which farmers depend on being litter free.
“Up until this year there was really only ever an organized highway cleanups,” said Iris Saxer, executive director of Teton Valley Community Recycling. “And so all of the county roads, irrigation ditches, parks we’re just kind of left up to the cities or individuals. So now that we have this program, not only can we document how much waste is out there, but how many people are cleaning up.”
People interested in the program can adopt however much land they want. Whether it be a section of a park, or a mile of land around their mailbox. You just have to sign up and get an orange trash bag from RAD Curbside, then designate a time for when it will be picked up on the side of the road. Those in the community want to make sure their valley stays beautiful.
“It’s important for the community to get together to clean up the beautiful valley because that’s why we’re here. We love it,” Hudacsko said. “We don’t want to enjoy it not just as it is with litter around every once in a while. We want to have it clean.”
