Firefighters conduct weekend exercise

State, local, and federal fire fighting agencies joined a full day of exercises on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands near the Menan Buttes Saturday.

The exercises were aimed at honing cooperative fire fighting tactics between multiple agencies. The exercise operated from the Jefferson Central Fire Station in Menan.

The Menan Butte area has seen active fire activity over the past two years. According to the BLM, almost 60% of fires in eastern Idaho are human-caused.

Target shooting, using explosive targets, and fireworks were among the principal causes.
