JACKSON, Mississippi (WAPT) — Police have arrested a man accused of physically assaulting a University of Mississippi Medical Center employee.
The incident was reported Tuesday evening in Stadium Parking Lot B after the employee left work, Dr. Jonathan Wilson, hospital CAO, said in a message to employees.
“The male offender demanded a ride from the victim, who dropped their keys and offered their car to the subject,” Wilson said. “As the offender got in the vehicle and drove away, the victim ran in the direction of a group of nearby UMMC employees, who called 911.”
A weapon was not used in the assault, Wilson said. Details of the arrest, including the suspect’s name, were not immediately released.
“We are very concerned for the safety of our employees, students, patients and visitors,” Wilson continued. “An evaluation of this incident and the circumstances surrounding it is underway.”
Police presence was increased Wednesday in response to the attack and additional safety measures have been put in place in and around the stadium parking lots. UMMC is also offering escorts to employees to and from their vehicles.
