SW Idaho man gets 5 years for setting 4 police cars on fire

A southwestern Idaho man who set four police cars on fire has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Sixty-nine-year-old Darrel Rich of Emmett received the sentence Thursday in U.S. District Court in Boise.

He pleaded guilty in February to damage by fire to vehicles owned by an institution receiving federal funding and damage by fire to vehicles used in interstate commerce.

Authorities say he set four Emmett Police Department vehicles on fire just after midnight on July 26, 2017, by pouring gas behind each of them and igniting it.

Authorities say police officers visited Rich’s residence the day before, but didn’t say why they visited. Rich later called his sister, authorities say, and told her the police needed to back off or somebody was going to get hurt.
