Bingham County Sheriff’s Office hiring detention staff 18 to 21 years of age

The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office can now hire full-time detention staff who are 18 to 21 years of age.

There is a huge shortage of detention staff in Idaho.

Idaho used to require law enforcement workers to be 21 or older.

A year ago, that rule was changed for correction staff. They now can be 18 or older.

This year, the department was given an exception, until the legislative body meets again, to allows detention staff to be 18 and older.

Detention staffers work in the jail feeding and providing medication to inmates.

They are responsible for escorting inmates to their court cases and returning them back to their cells.

“I think it’s really important if you are in that age group, for you to know if correction or law enforcement is a career field you want to be in. It’s not a come and test it out and see if you like it, ” Bingham County Sheriff’s Office captain Mark Cowley said. “I think it’s really important if you are in that age group, for you to know if correction or law enforcement is a career field you want to be in. It’s not a come and test it out and see if you like it. We want someone looking for a long term career.
