Idaho fires Verlin after 11 seasons

The University of Idaho announced Friday that head mens basketball coach Don Verlin has been terminated for cause. Current university president Chuck Staben and incoming president C. Scott Green were both involved in the decision. Verlin had been placed on leave earlier this year after potential NCAA violations had been discovered during an audit.

In a release, athletic director Pete Isakson stated, “These are not easy conversations or decisions, but we have a direct responsibility to do what is best for the university. Our fundamental goal in U of I athletics is that each sports program be a source of pride for the Vandal community.” He added, “Foundational to meeting that goal is an absolute commitment to compliance and excellence.”

Assistant coach Zac Claus has been named the interim coach and will stay in that role throughout the 2019-2020 season. A search for a permanent replacement will begin next spring.

In 11 seasons as head coach, Verlin led the Vandals to a 177-176 record.
