REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI/KDIK) - Eastern Idaho Public Health will announce the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Madison County at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

You can watch a livestream of the meeting live below.

Officials said the person is a male BYU-Idaho student who is in his 20's.

This case is related to travel outside of Idaho. The male became symptomatic on March 8 while he was still out of the state.

He returned to Idaho on March 11, and he remained at home until seeking medical care and being tested on March 12.

The individual is in his apartment in Rexburg recovering from mild symptoms and did not require hospitalization.

He will continue to be in isolation and be monitored by Eastern Idaho Public Health.

This brings the total number of lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Idaho to eight.

This is the second case in eastern Idaho. A woman under the age of 60 in Teton County contracted COVID-19 due to contact with a confirmed case in a neighboring state. She is home recovering from mild symptoms and did not require hospitalization.

The criteria below will still be used to determine who needs to be tested for COVID19:

  • If you have no symptoms, you will not be tested… and there is no need for you to be tested.
  • If you have fever with a cough or fever with shortness of breath, first call your healthcare provider.
  • Advise them of the following: your symptoms, any recent travel history, and any contact with a person CONFIRMED to have COVID-19.
  • They will advise you what to do.
  • DO NOT show up unannounced; call ahead first.
  • If you don’t have a healthcare provider, know there are options available and guidance can be given if you need help finding one.
  • If your provider advises you to come in for a check-up, they will determine the need to run a COVID-19 test.

Your healthcare provider can choose to run a COVID-19 test if:

  • You have symptoms with a history of recent travel OR
  • You have symptoms and contact with a person confirmed to have COVID-19
