Pocatello Woman Turns 111
A Pocatello woman is now the ripe age of 111, and young and old came to wish her a happy birthday on Thursday.
The oldest official living Greek citizen, Mersene Zohos came to the United States more than 60 years ago, and she still hasn’t quite picked up English.
But her smile was all the language she needed to show her gratitude for the birthday wishes during her afternoon party.
A class of Washington Elementary third-graders, born 100 years after Mersene, came to the Pocatello Senior Center and gave her homemade cards and sang her “Happy Birthday.”
Mersene decided the kids deserved to hear a song too and gave an impromptu performance of an old Greek song.
The party had everything a birthday needs: balloons, dancing, and cake, though staff at Greater Pocatello Senior Center thought 111 candles might be too much of a fire risk.
With the help of her daughter, Artemis Zohos, Mersene told us her secret to living a long and healthy life.
?She?s drenched in olive oil. It?s all she eats, and she goes through an entire shaker of table salt for each meal.?
