A 16-year-old girl from Illinois is dead after a 75-foot tree fell on her Monday afternoon in the Turpine Meadows area east of Jackson.
According to Captain Tripp Wilson with the Teton Sheriff’s Office, Elizabeth Burns of Lake Forest, Ill., was with a backpacking group called Wilderness Ventures. The group of 14 included 12 who were 16-years-old, and two adults.
Wilson said the group was hanging their food bag in a tree to keep it away from the bears, when the 75-foot tree uprooted and fell on the girl, killing her instantly.
it’s not clear if everyone from the group is from the same area.
