Fire Destroys Wapiti Restaurant

A fire has destroyed the Wapiti Restaurant just west of the Buffalo Bill Reservoir in northern Wyoming.

The fire occurred Tuesday night when the restaurant was closed. No one was hurt.

About 35 firefighters and law enforcement personnel from Cody responded to the fire call at 7:36 p.m.

Fire Warden Russ Wenke tells the Cody Enterprise (http://bit.ly/qaJbZT) that the fire appeared to be already burning fiercely in the basement by the time firefighters arrived.

He says the main floor collapsed when firefighters tried to enter the building.

The Wapiti Post Office next to the restaurant was not damaged.

Real estate agent John Parsons says the restaurant building was listed for sale about three weeks ago.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
