Train Hits Semi In Shelley

A semi-truck vs. train crash occurred in Shelley on Wednesday.

Idaho State police said Laron Nielsen, 47, of Idaho Falls, was traveling west on Center St. towards U.S. 91 in a 2004 Columbian Freightliner semi-truck at about 4:30 p.m. Nielsen crossed over the railroad tracks that were parallel to U.S. 91 and stopped at a stop sign to turn northbound onto the highway.

Joseph Kelley, 58, of Pocatello, was the engineer of the train that was heading northbound on the railroad tracks. The back of Nielsen’s semi-trailer was about 6 inches over the railroad tracks when the train struck the semi’s trailer, police said.

Nielsen and his one passenger were wearing seat belts. There were no injuries in the truck or train.

The railroad crossing at Center Street was closed for two hours.

The crash is under investigation.
