Police Investigate Blackfoot Shooting

Bingham County sheriff officials are investigating the shooting of 19-year-old Dakota Olesen, whom they said was shot by his 16-year-old brother in their Blackfoot home.

Sheriff Dave Johnson said the nature of the shooting is still being investigated and a determination has not yet been made. However, Dakota’s family is saying the incident was a complete accident.

”I just want to clear the air and let people know that this was a pure accident, and I hope others can learn from this,? said father Justin Oleson.

Johnson says these types of incidents don’t happen too often in rural Idaho, as guns are common and many take gun safety classes through the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

The Oleson family said they hope others can learn from this.

“Treat every gun like it’s loaded, and make sure you’re being safe so that nobody else gets hurt,” said Justin.

Dakota is expected to make a full recovery, and his family says he should be out of the hospital sometime next week.

Johnson said the investigation will most likely be completed next week and will then be handed to the prosecutor.
