Are You At Risk For Diabetes?

Diabetes affects nearly 90,000 or 1 in 12 Idahoans, the Eastern Idaho Public Health District said, and you can find out if you are at risk.

Tuesday is Diabetes Alert Day across the nation.

For 24 years, the district sets aside one special day for you to find out if you are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.

Over the past 13 years, diabetes diagnosis has doubled in Idaho, according to the American Diabetes Association.

If you think you might be even *remotely* at risk for type-2 onset diabetes, you can get a free diabetes risk test from the association.

“If we can diagnose Type 2 diabetes early you have less risk of complications like blindness, kidney failure, amputation, loss of feeling in your feet and in your hands,” said Public Health District Health Education Specialist Timalee Geisler. “Your blood sugars, you can manage them so that you feel better every day.”

Even though Tuesday is the special awareness day, the risk test is available year round.
