Teton High School Hazing Lawsuit Dropped

A private lawsuit against Teton School District has been dropped. The suit, filed by Brad Brewster centered on a 2010 hazing incident at Teton High School in Driggs.

Two students said they were inappropriately hazed in a high school wrestling practice room and later in the school locker room. Superintendent Monte Woolstenhume said high school administration learned of the incident the next day and launched its own investigation. Three perpetrators were identified. Their high school discipline included athletic program consequences.

Woolstenhume said the school district cooperated fully with law enforcement investigations, although no formal charges were ever filed.

Brewster, the father of one of the victims, sued the high school and district in August 2010, but dropped the case before its scheduled trial before 7th District Judge Greg Moeller on March 19, the school district announced Tuesday. The case was resolved without the school district or its insurance provider paying any money.

“The school district has always believed that their employees acted appropriately, in a timely manner, and had no liability in this case,” Woolstenhume said.

He said the district continues to work to ensure that schools are safe for all students and has implemented staff training and intervention programs.

No further incidents have been reported in any district school or extracurricular program.
