Accident backs up traffic on highway

An accident backed up traffic on U.S. Highway 20 in Jefferson County on Tuesday when emergency crews responded to a fire near the road.

The wreck occurred a mile from the Lorenzo Interchange, three miles north of Rigby when a Jeep crashed into the back of a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office squad car parked behind a fire engine, totaling both cars.

The driver of the Jeep was hurt and taken to the hospital by ambulance. The deputy is fine.

As of 5 p.m., traffic was backed up.

The fire appeared to have been caused by sparks from a tow truck.
