Pocatello soldier loses legs in Afghanistan explosion

The family of a 20-year-old Pocatello soldier says he lost both of his legs and suffered other injuries when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on foot patrol in Afghanistan.

Dennis Krumwiede of Pocatello tells the Idaho State Journal that his son, Matthew, also suffered a fractured pelvis, a broken left arm, internal injuries and lost a couple of fingers in Sunday’s explosion.

Matthew Krumwiede is receiving treatment at a U.S. military hospital in Afghanistan and once stabilized, is expected to be airlifted to a hospital in the U.S. or Germany.

Matthew has an identical twin brother who’s also in the U.S. Army. Their father said Mark Krumwiede recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq and Kuwait and is currently at Fort Hood, Texas.
