Legacy Air Show takes off on Saturday

Just in time for Father’s Day, the Legacy Flight Museum is putting on its annual air show in Rexburg on Saturday. This year, the show has a whole lineup of daredevil pilots ready to show off their moves.

“It’s the freedom,” said David Erickson, air show pilot. “It’s the freedom of three-dimensional flight.”

Erickson said he’s excited to perform in Saturday’s airshow. He learned his aerobatic maneuvers, like tumbling nose over tail, from one of the best — Greg Poe, a world-famous aerobatic pilot, who died from a massive heart attack last year. Up until then though, Poe performed at the Legacy Airshow almost every year.

“Tomorrow you’ll see me fly an airplane nose over tail and that was his (Poe’s) forte,” said Erickson. “He used to love doing that.”

Nearly 30 aircraft will be on display Saturday. Their pilots have logged thousands of hours up in the air and look forward to showing off their skills and inspiring others to hop in a plane.

“It’s an opportunity to show our airplanes to the community and it’s also an opportunity to talk to young people about a career in aviation,” said Gary Rower, air show pilot.

For Erickson, flying is something he discovered he loved during college.

“I went out and took a flying lesson and fell in love with it and the rest is history,” said Erickson.

The pilots said their goal for this air show is to go for that wow factor and give people the thrill of their lives.

The Legacy Air Show runs from 9 a.m. To 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Rexburg Airport.

Organizers said there are no admission fees and they encourage attendees to arrive early, as parking may be limited.
