Three regional communities receive transit grants
Pocatello, Driggs, and Jackson, Wyoming will receive part of $787 million in transit facility funding announced by US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood Monday. They’re part of 255 projects in 48 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico aimed at modernizing the nation’s aging transit infrastructure.
Pocatello was awarded $1.4 million to allow the city to construct a transit maintenance garage and administrative passenger facility. The project would consolidate facilities at one site and replace two 65 to 75 year old facilities that no longer meet the system’s needs.
The Idaho Department of Transportation was awarded $830 thousand on behalf of the city of Driggs. That funding will be used to build a 1,500 square foot, LEED certified passenger facility and part of a 110 space “park and ride” lot to support transit and passengers.
The town of Jackson, Wyoming was awarded $1.5 million. It will be used to construct two bicycle pedestrian facilities to complete missing links in the pathway system. Those facilities will connect the START public transportation facility to the valley-wide multimodal network. The projects are intended to provide walking and biking links between transit, mixed use neighborhoods and visitor oriented commercial areas in “economically and ethnically diverse” areas of town.
