Police arrest fugitive in Bingham County

Police arrested a fugitive west of Firth High School on Tuesday.

The fugitive, Francisco P. Tarin, 41, is the suspect in a high-speed chase through Idaho Falls last week. He had been wanted on felony burglary and misdemeanor stalking warrants. The Bonneville Sheriff’s Office called off that chase due to concerns over public safety. In addition, Tarin was allegedly involved in a high-speed chase in Twin Falls on Monday and Idaho Falls again on Monday night, before wrecking his car in Shelley early Tuesday morning.

Authorities had tracked him to Firth by pinging his cell phone. At some point, they also texted him.

Tarin, who was armed, is suspected of stealing a small fishing boat from a dock of the Snake River. The boat belongs to Scott Greer, who owns river property. Tarin used the boat to access a small island in the river.

Greer said a state trooper came to his door around 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

“He told me there was a fugitive that was involved in a high speed chase,” said Greer.

Greer offered officers use of his boat dock, but when police told him his boat was missing, he knew what had happened.

“He had used the boat to run to the island,” said Greer.

The fishing boat was recovered.

Several law enforcement agencies were involved in the search, which began early Tuesday morning. They used boats and airplanes in the search.

Tarin was arrested at 2 p.m. after police issued a call over a patrol car loudspeaker informing Tarin he was surrounded and encouraged him to give up peacefully, which he did.
