Home burglaries surge in Bonneville County

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the community’s help as home burglaries become a growing concern throughout the county.

Missing valuables and strange footprints in the snow leading to the back door are a growing phenomenon throughout Bonneville County, where 14 home burglaries have happened since February 1. That’s compared to three during this same time frame last year.

“Very similar patterns with very similar items being taken,” said Sgt. Jeff Edwards of several of the recent burglaries. “We do believe they are the same group of people because of those things.”

Edwards also noted that a majority of the break-ins happened in slightly more remote areas — just outside city limits. He said the thieves try their luck at times when working families were most likely to be out of the house.

At this rate, Edwards said their luck will eventually run out.

“If this continues to be a pattern, we’re definitely going to have somebody enter a home that’s occupied, and it that case, get the best description possible,” Edwards said.

Until then, it’s all about prevention.

“In some cases, the alarm scared these people away,” Edwards said. “You know the people that live around you. You know the people who just drive through on a regular basis. If it just (doesn’t) look right, you let us know.”

Three homes in the Comore Loma neighborhood in the Ammon foothills have been burglarized since February 1. Neighbors describe two young male suspects with dark hair driving around in a two-door, older model car.

The number for the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is 208-529-1200.
