Talking torque and cool cars at annual event in Pocatello

Some people like them because they’re shiny, powerful and comfortable.

But whatever draws you to them, the cars and motorcycles at this year’s Chrome in the Dome made for some good fun.

From big, to little, to just plain cool, the vehicles at the event were certainly top of the line.

“We’re getting different cars every year, and more and more people coming out,” said Brock Gunter, an event organizer and auto instructor. “We’re getting a lot of car owners and a lot of people from Utah coming up to enjoy the show.”

The event is a fundraiser for the auto clubs on the ISU campus, which are a part of the skills USA organization.

The money they received will help pay for club activities.

“It helps us get out and do some field trips, tour some plants, learn a little more about the fields, the automotive field we’re going into,” said Jeremy Dustin, public relations officer for the Automotive Technology Skills USA. “It’s a lot of fun. A lot of work, but a lot of fun.”

Chrome in the Dome, which ran Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23, showcased vehicles from all eras and walks of life.

From off road vehicles, to muscles cars, to cars that have been restored, these automobiles look fresh off the assembly line.

“I think people are just amazed to see them in such good shape and maintained so well,” Dustin said. “I think that really draws the crowd, too.”

One show stopper was the trophy section.

These trophies are hand-crafted from car parts and given to winners of different areas, like best ’50s car, best muscle car and the people’s choice.

“The trophies – we’ve actually been working on since I started the program, which I started in January of last year,” Dustin stated. “So the students have been working on them for over a year now to get them ready for the show.”

A favorite aspect of the event were the opportunities for some to see cars from the past, and the nostalgia it brought back for some who used to drive them.
