Sheriff: Murder suspect makes weapon in jail

A man accused of murder made a weapon out of a toothbrush in the Bonneville County Jail, the sheriff’s office said.

Adan Arroyo, 23, was arraigned Wednesday on felony charges of possession of contraband and injury to a jail (vandalism).

Also accused of making “shanks” out of their toothbrushes are inmates Richard Frye, 24, and Joel Santos, 18, who are facing the same charges after guards discovered the improvised weapons March 26.

Deputies said Arroyo fired the four shots that killed 21-year-old Kristy Aschliman on Jan. 19 east of Idaho Falls. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and will have a pretrial hearing in July.

Frye and Santos had been booked into the jail on lesser, unrelated charges.
