This week Idahoans kick off Yoga Awareness Week

People across Idaho are putting on their yoga pants and rolling-out those yoga mats this week after Governor Butch Otter declared this to be the first official Idaho Health and Yoga Awareness Week.

Pocatello yoga instructor and former nurse and Idaho State University nursing instructor Cathy Olsen said yoga is a great way to stay fit and healthy.

“There is a huge medical link right now with yoga. So not just the para-synthetic slowing of your heart, your respiration, and your blood pressure issues, but now bringing a peacefulness to your mind and body as well,” Olsen said.

She also said studies done by Duke University’s interactive medicine program have shown a strong, positive correlation between yoga and a steep decrease in patients suffering from stress, anxiety, depression, and high blood pressure. She also said studies are currently being done to discover how yoga can help kids who have certain degrees of autism and ADHD.

Olsen said there will be free yoga classes offered throughout the various Pocatello yoga studios for the rest of this week. You can find them at: Mind Your Body, SKY Studio, Renew You, Fitness Inc., the community recreation center, and Freedom to Breathe in the Idaho Skin Institute and Med Spa facility.
