4 Utah hepatitis A cases linked to frozen berries

Authorities say they’ve identified four cases of hepatitis A in Utah as part of a regional outbreak linked to a frozen organic berry mix from a farm in Oregon.

Health officials in Salt Lake City say none of the victims were hospitalized, and all have recovered.

More than 60 cases have been identified in Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Hawaii. The berries have also been sold in Idaho, but no cases have been reported in the Gem State.

The FDA says the illnesses are linked to Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend, which contains pomegranate seed mix. It is sold in Costco stores.

A Costco spokesman says the company has removed the product from stores and is contacting its members.

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that can last from a few weeks to a several months. It is spread when a person ingests contaminated fecal matter, even in tiny amounts.
