Suspect in mail thefts in custody

Pocatello police have arrested the man they said has been stealing mail from home mailboxes around the city.

Danny Early Matthews, 45, of West Valley, Utah, was arrested after police recognized him in a Westmark Credit Union surveillance video from a Bannock County jail booking photo.In the video, Matthews was wearing a hat with a Chevrolet logo. The hat was seized as evidence.

Police said Matthews is suspected of taking mail from mailboxes and chemically washing checks found in them.

He would then change the name and amount of the check and cash it at a bank, officers said.

Matthews was arrested at the Bannock County Jail on Wednesday afternoon on charges of possession of forged notes or bills.

Bonneville County has also seen thefts from mailboxes recently. Police have not linked Matthews to those thefts.
