Group to help vets with yard work

A group that helps disabled vets by performing yard work kicks off Tuesday.

Veterans Helping Hands was started by Marissa McKinney, a Miss Idaho Falls Teen hopeful who chose helping disabled veterans as her platform.

She was inspired by her father, 1st Sgt. Hugh McKinney.

“My dad served two tours in Iraq, and he came home with a brain injury from being too close to bombs,” said Marissa. “And we have a pretty big yard and he can’t seem to do it by himself. I just want to help out.”

You can check out Veterans Helping Hands on its Facebook page, http://on.fb.me/172AA73. You’ll find info about where and when you can offer your service. You can also nominate local veterans for future events.

Marissa aims to help three to five local veterans over the summer.

If you want to help, go to 5985 South 45th East in Idaho Falls at 6 p.m Tuesday. Bring gloves and a good attitude.
